Community Chapter: Historic Preservation and Nature Conservancy

1890 Log Cabin on Bluff of Ol’ St Joe. One of the oldest structures in Berrien County, just down from the original County courthouse at the juncture of Shaker Farm Rd and Bluff St. My Covid Sabbatical has been spent restoring and upgrading the interior, as well as constructing a series of terraces to hold up the Bluff. Louis and I have planted at least two dozen trees and shrubs and native wildflowers to save the Bluff by creating a Rain Garden.

Career Chapter: Sisterhood

We’ve worked together at two different Construction Management firms and we count on each other for smooth sailing! Teamwork is the best work environment there is. Never could figure out who was mentoring who! Pretty sure I did impart the art of a good martini though 🙂

Die Hard Cub Fans : Our Mothers Were Karen and I make a point of making to a game every year. Some quiet traditions, the ones you just do, that are the absolute best. Dad and his Southside Girls. Often a family divided as to Cubs vs Sox, we have fully embraced all Chicago baseball has to offer! Yep - that’s youngest daughter Blanche hawking soda in the upper decks.

Personal Chapter: Military Parents

Mom was a Marine drill sergeant of aerial artillery in WWII And she met and married this super handsome Navy man running the Veterans Administration in Baltimore, MD. As a child I learned how to bounce a dime on my freshly made bed and that you can’t leave any “holidays” if you’re on KP duty from my Dad.

My mother sent this out as the family Christmas card just after I was born. Bit of a head trip - ha ha. Started skipping school at a young age to go fishing with Dad and Brothers. Flash Forward Fifty   I am a happily married, mother of four daughters and two grandchildren. I still live near my brothers and sister and love this part of the Midwest, its people and Great Lakes.

Community Chapter: Habitat for Humanity

One of the best parts of my career is when it intersects with my community.  Loved serving as the safety officer for this build in West Pullman.  We also managed a build on Michigan Ave at Tribune Tower with Chicago Bears.  One of my favorite activities!

41st St Pedestrian Bridge over Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, Il I fought long and hard to create this essential connectivity to the lakefront park system for the public housing residents of the North Kenwood/Oakland neighborhood. It is beautiful and really brings people to the natural beauty in this urban environment.

I met Toni Preckwinkle walking home from a community meeting together sometime back in the 80’s. So glad to call her friend and happy to introduce her to my gal pals in my home to discuss issues facing Cook County. Loved working for her and with her to improve Chicago’s south lakefront communities for over 30 years.

Emergency Preparedness Exercises at O’Hare International Airport - Summer 2019 As Assistant Commissioner for Intergovernmental Affairs, I was so proud of all of our first responders and aviation professionals who took part in the triennial exercises at O’Hare. Safety is no accident and as an OSHA 30 certified professional I truly was amazed at the level of thought and training our community put into this drill.

Community Chapters: Park Advocate

This was a remnant of green along an armored riverfront. Below the Bluff from the Whitcomb Hotel and Mineral Springs and a beautiful band shell anchoring the bluff walk. This greenway led to the lakefront, the Silver Beach Amusement Park and Shadowland Ballroom. But it needed a sense of place and aesthetic, purpose, way-finding, street furniture, TREES 🌳  TODAY St. Joseph Michigan The Margaret Upton Arboretum A riparian public park along the St. Joseph River at the Great Lake Michigan As a child, I walked the streets of my small hometown gathering signatures on the petition to create this park, which is still much enjoyed today. It beautifully connects the bluff and bandshell, to the new carousel and swing bridge and scenic pier walks, as well as the improved Silver Beach park. Our referendum was carried and the Upton family donated the funds for development of this shady place along the banks of the river. My happy place 😊
